Like we said on Wednesday night: Funny as it was to joke about, there was a good chance that Evander Kane's absence from the Jets' lineup on Tuesday . Lo and behold, according to a report by Sportsnet'sChris Johnston, there was more to it. : Kane wore a track suit when the Jets players gathered that morning a violation of team policy. Following a brief workout and stretch, (Dustin)Byfuglien is said to have thrown those clothes into the shower to send a me sage to his teammate, according to sources. That was the last the Winnipeg players saw of Kane until the teams charter flight home. In other words, Kane's sweatsuit didn't get him scratched. After the incident, he stopped answering his phone, didn't ride the bus to the rink in Vancouver, then eventually picked up and said he wouldn't be playing. Afterwards, coach Paul Maurice called it a coaching decision. Kane's side of the story, , makes sense: He was in sweats because he thought the meeting was at the hotel, not the arena, and didn't have time to change. In any case, Thursday's developmentsweren'tall that hard to see coming, especially given teammate Blake Wheeler's reaction inmorning, before Johnston's report: Wheeler on rules: Theres a standard that everyone needs to live up to. If you dont like it then theres other places to go." Paul Friesen (@friesensunmedia) Adding to the complexity of the situation is that Kane, according to multiple reports, has been playing all season with an injury that will require surgery at some point. He was absent from the Jets' practice on Thursday to meet with team doctors, Maurice said. All this comes a few hours after several reports that the Jets are listening intently to trade offers for Kane. If he winds up on long-term injured reserve, Elmarko Jackson Jersey a deal wouldn't be po sible which is a shame, because it should. Like, now. A divorce would be understandable on both sides. The apparent reality that Kane pi sed off his teammatesthen skipped a gameshouldn't be ignored. This is, if we're being honest, a level or two up from the money phone. Byfuglien shouldn't go blamele s, though. What also shouldn't be ignored: This has all been simmering for a while, and it's impo sible to know the entirety of what's gone down, on either side. If this is the worst thing Kane has done, though, nobody should write him off. He's too talented. Over the last four seasons, 29 regular NHL players have scored more goals per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 playthan Kane, at 0.96. If you're of the mindset that his 30-goal 2011-12 sesonis anoutlier, he drops to 45th (0.88). That'sfirst/second-line productivity. His overall point production isn't at that level, but that's a tough ask, given that over the last three years have been Olli Jokinen and Mark Scheifele. This season, he's played largely on a third-line role, driven po se sion, scored 10 goals and grown into a good penalty killer. And, again, he's 23 years old. From a hockey standpoint, with some context added to the numbers, there shouldn't be much to worry about. It's not that simple, though; it's tough, for a lot of reasons, to imagine Kane fulfilling his potential with the Jets. Given the last couple days, it's tougher to imagine the Jets receiving full value for himas a hockey player. In short, this doesn't seem particularly fixable and there's a good chance that some team, whether it's now or in June, is going to benefit. Big time. Tristan Golightly Jersey
