The most important RIS features depend on the radiology department’s workflow, but several capabilities are generally valuable. These include patient registration, appointment scheduling, imaging order management, examination tracking, modality worklists, radiology reporting, result distribution, billing support, analytics, and user access controls. Integration is also important, especially with PACS, EHR/HIS, and imaging modalities. A good RIS should help staff follow an examination from the initial order through completion and final reporting. When evaluating software, hospitals should focus not only on the number of features but also on usability, interoperability, scalability, security, and support.
