Which area of Mykonos is best for a first visit?

I’m visiting Mykonos for the first time and trying to figure out where to stay. I’d like somewhere convenient for beaches and sightseeing, but not necessarily right in the busiest nightlife area. Which parts of the island would you recommend, and are there any places I shouldn’t miss?
