What do you drink during surface intervals — hydration strategy for multi dive days?

Hey DiveKeeper Community! 💧
Simple but important question — what is your drink strategy during surface intervals on multi dive day trips?
Most dive training covers equipment and technique thoroughly but nutrition and hydration get almost no systematic attention despite genuinely affecting both performance and safety. Dehydration risk is real for divers given dry breathing gas moisture loss and physical exertion — yet surface intervals are often spent socializing rather than actively rehydrating.
My current surface interval approach:
- Minimum 500ml water before any other drink
- Electrolytes on hot weather days or physically demanding dive sites
- Light caffeine if a long surface interval allows absorption time before next dive
- Avoid alcohol entirely until all diving is finished for the day
For caffeine specifically I have been using the Dutch Bros protein coffee line documented at brosmenu on land based dive trip mornings — the protein plus moderate caffeine combination sustains energy through multi dive days better than pure espresso drinks.
Community questions:
- 🤿 Water only between dives or do you include other drinks?
- 🤿 Does your hydration strategy change between tropical and cold water diving?
- 🤿 Any sports science research on optimal diver hydration the community recommends?
Would love to hear experienced diver hydration strategies!
