The Promise Rings For Couples: Why it is positioned on the left hand of the ring finger and other curiosities

The exchange of the wedding ring, the symbol par excellence of the vow of love and fidelity between the two couples is a long-standing tradition that has remained in place for a long time.

But what is the significance of this historic and emotional rite, and why was the left ring finger chosen? Learn about the history and traditions related to the wedding ring.

     History and the significance

From the ancient Egyptians to the present day, Couple Gifts represent the bond that is created between two spouses. The meaning of wedding rings has changed over time: for barbarians the ring represented the wife's submission, for pagans it symbolized the end of a marriage contract, and for Romans, it was a sign of the vow made to the husband.

The custom of exchanging rings, which is in use today, was established in the 16th century. The tradition of wearing a wedding ring for life goes back to the 17th century, but only in the 18th century did the practice of engraving the wedding date along with the names of the bride and groom's spouses become commonplace.

Today the wedding ring symbolizes the trust and promise that spouses make for their future lives together.

Why do wedding rings have to be worn on the ring finger?

This tradition is deeply rooted in many cultures and there are a variety of explanations.

The ring finger was considered to be the finger for feelings to ancient Romans because a small blood vessel called "vena amoris" is located there and leads directly to the chest. According to Christian tradition, however, the fourth finger, which is used by the priest for the recitation of the Holy Trinity, symbolizes fidelity and protection.

There is also an old Chinese legend that says the rings fingers represent our partner. You can divide all fingers, except for your ring finger by joining your hands, keeping your middle finger (the finger that represents yourself) down. This is because your parents (thumbs), index fingers (siblings) and little fingers (children) will eventually separate from you, while your partner will remain in your arms for the rest of their lives.

Gold is a Christian tradition. It is resistant to time and a symbol of eternity. It was also used to decorate churches and other ecclesiastical items.

Wedding etiquette comprises a number of rules for wedding rings. They should be purchased separately from the engagement ring and are not permitted to be worn before the wedding. It is also typical to have witnesses give them as a wedding gift and have them carried to the altar by a bridesmaid or pageboy, or placed on a special pillow.

Whatever you choose to do be sure to remember that your wedding rings will accompany you for the rest of your lives together. They'll be a testimony of your love and the most important day of your life. best wishes!
