The Reading Skills I Focused on for the FTCE Reading K-12 Test

Preparing for the FTCE Reading K-12 Exam became much easier once I focused on the specific skills covered by the Florida Department of Education (FDOE). The current competencies emphasize evidence-based reading instruction, assessment, language development, vocabulary, word recognition, fluency, comprehension, and reading program development.

FTCE Reading K-12 and Reading Research

I started with reading research and major theories of reading development. The exam expects candidates to understand evidence-based research and connect theories of reading processes with instructional applications. I reviewed these areas first because they helped me understand why particular teaching strategies are appropriate for different learners.

FTCE Reading K-12 and Text Analysis

Next, I focused on literary and informational texts. I practiced identifying text structures, text features, genres, formats, and levels of text complexity. I also reviewed how teachers select appropriate print and nonprint materials based on grade level, complexity, learner needs, and student interests.

FTCE Reading K-12 and Foundational Skills

Foundational reading skills received a major part of my study time. I reviewed phonological awareness, phonics, decoding, word analysis, high-frequency words, and word recognition. I also studied evidence-based methods for developing these skills across different learners. These topics are specifically included in the current competencies.

FTCE Reading K-12 and Vocabulary Development

Vocabulary was another important area. I practiced using context, connotations, morphology, and background knowledge to determine word meanings. I also reviewed ways to help students develop conversational, academic, and subject-specific vocabulary. Finally, I spent time on fluency and comprehension.
