Real vs Fake Oud Oil: How Can You Tell the Difference?

I was checking several fragrance samples for my oud collection when an unexpected [late-night quality review of a new agarwood oil batch] made me realize how confusing it can be to identify real vs fake oud oil. Real oud oil is extracted from naturally infected agarwood trees and has a deep, complex scent that slowly evolves on the skin with woody, smoky, and slightly sweet layers. Fake oud oil, however, is usually made with synthetic fragrance chemicals or diluted carrier oils, which makes the scent smell flat and fade much faster. Another noticeable difference is texture and color—authentic oud oil often looks darker and slightly thicker, while fake versions may appear very light or watery. The aroma of real oud also changes gradually over time, whereas synthetic oils tend to smell the same from start to finish. Because genuine oud is rare and expensive, extremely cheap “pure oud” is usually a warning sign. Understanding these differences helps buyers choose authentic oud oil that truly offers richness, depth, and long-lasting character.
