My brother got arrested after a shooting on federal property, and now he’s facing a murder charge in federal court. Our family is still trying to wrap our heads around how serious this has become, because a few days ago we were worried about getting him out, and now we’re talking about a case that could completely change his life. We don’t want to hand this to the first criminal lawyer who answers the phone. Who would you recommend for a federal murder case like this?

Man, that’s a brutal thing to get dropped on your family. The first couple of days are probably just people trying to understand what happened, and then suddenly somebody has to start making real decisions about the defense. I’d use the NACDL directory to narrow things down to lawyers who actually work in federal court and handle serious violent felony cases. Call a few and pay attention to who asks detailed questions about the indictment and the evidence before talking about anything else.

I’d keep the circle pretty small from here and stop retelling the whole story to every office that picks up the phone. The case is already serious enough, and your brother needs one lawyer who can get into the paperwork fast and start dealing with what prosecutors are actually claiming. You can hire a federal murder lawyer through this firm here: https://arkadybukhlawfirm.com/practice-areas/criminal-defense-federal-crimes/ . The firm handles federal criminal cases involving serious violent charges. Talk through the indictment with the lawyer and see what they think the strongest points of the defense are.
