How can you avoid getting lost at Amsterdam International Airport?

I’ve been living in Munich for a couple of years now, and I’m sending my dad to visit relatives in Toronto—he’s flying via the Netherlands. Dad’s already in his sixties, and he doesn’t really know his way around foreign airports, to put it mildly. I can’t go with him myself because of work, so now I’m sitting here wondering how he’ll manage on his own in that hive of activity. I’ve read on forums that the distances there are enormous and the crowds of people from all over the world are overwhelming—it’s easy for an elderly person to get lost in them. I’m worried he’ll simply miss his gate, confusing the numbers or directions on the departure board.

I want to write him a clear, step-by-step guide on a piece of paper so he can follow it like a GPS. Guys, can you give me some practical advice on the main landmarks or key points there so he definitely doesn’t get lost? Preferably something as simple as possible, without any complicated terms. The main thing is to prevent panic if he suddenly realizes he’s heading in the wrong direction. By the way, are there any information desks with staff there that he can just walk up to and ask for help?

I understand. I am always sending my parents to Europe from Texas, and I get so nervous when I do. But it's really very easy at Schiphol. Everything is color-coded and lettered, so you can't really get lost. And the worst is explaining to your dad that he should find the letter of his pier (D or E) on the big yellow boards and go with the arrows. I also printed out some instructions for a relative before he went, because I got them off a perfect website called https://amsterdam-ams-international-airport.com/en . And yes, there are information kiosks everywhere (bright yellow jacketed employees walking around), and you'll always find somebody to point you in the right direction. Is his layover long?
